When to Get a Kia Oil Change

a car owner learning when to get a kia oil change

If you want your new, used, or certified pre-owned Kia running as smoothly as the day you got it, it’s necessary to stay on top of routine oil changes and maintenance. Engine oil helps protect the engine from overheating and removes any debris that is picked up. In turn, oil changes are an important part of keeping your Kia at peak performance. Oil changes used to be recommended every 3,000 miles, however, with new technology and performance capabilities, most cars can go 7,500 to 10,000 miles between oil changes. Learn more about how often to change oil, and other Kia oil change tips at Kearny Mesa Kia.

How Often to Change Oil

La Mesa drivers can rely on the 7,500 to 10,000-mile suggestion oil change frequency more often than not, however, how often to change oil can vary depending on the individual driving experience. Drivers of large SUVs, or drivers who find themselves traveling more often for work, taking road trips, or commuting might need to schedule an oil change a bit earlier than recommended. Other situations that may call for a more frequent oil changes are:

  • Off-roading
  • Commercial use
  • Racing
  • Heavy towing

How Long Does an Oil Change Take?

Scheduling an oil change doesn’t have to throw a wrench into the whole day. Those wondering how long an oil change takes will be glad to know that it only takes about an hour. If time is a little tight, you can easily schedule service online or call the local service center to ask when’s the best time to schedule an oil change.

Kia Oil Change Tips

Drivers all around Chula Vista have different schedules for keeping up with their Kia oil changes, but here are a few tips that everyone should consider on their next visit to the local Kia service center:

  • Even when the vehicle doesn’t see much use, the oil should be changed at least twice a year. All oil eventually breaks down, even when the car is sitting in the driveway.
  • When performing or getting an oil change, be sure to change the oil filter as well. Find oil filters and other oil change supplies in the part center at Kearny Mesa Kia.
  • Different models call for different oil types. If drivers are wondering, “what type of oil does my car need?” check the vehicle’s owner’s manual for whether it requires conventional or synthetic oil. While synthetic oil can cost more, the vehicle may require it.

Steps for Performing an Oil Change

Drivers interested in performing an oil change at home can not only keep to a consistent schedule, but also monitor for potential leaks in the system, oil discolorations, and any metal particles in the oil. Performing these checks can hint at any problems or issues before they lead to other vehicle components and more expensive repairs. How long this oil change takes depends on who’s performing, but expect it to take around an hour. To learn how to do a Kia oil change at home, follow these steps:

  1. Using jack stands or steel ramps, lift up the vehicle.
  2. Underneath the engine is the oil pan. Locate the oil drain plug, place an oil basin below the plug to catch the old oil. After unscrewing the plug, make sure the oil has completely drained before replacing the plug. Draining the oil may take up to 15 minutes.
  3. Using a wrench, remove the oil filter. Be sure to keep the oil basin in place as extra oil will drain out when removing the filter.
  4. Before placing the new filter, make sure to rub a bit of oil around the rubber seal. This helps ensure the filter is in place with a watertight seal.
  5. Place the filter and tighten by hand.
  6. Once the old oil is removed and the new filter is in place, remove the oil cap to fill in the new oil. Fill in the correct amount of the new oil and replace the oil cap. Check the vehicle’s owner’s manual for the correct measurements.
  7. Before hitting the road again, pull out the dipstick to check the oil levels. If the oil levels are too low, try adding another ounce and check the level again. Once the readings look good, enjoy taking the Kia for a ride!
