2035 EV Mandate in California

2022 Kia Niro EV Charging

In 2020, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order that all new vehicles sold in California by 2035 must be electric or plug-in hybrid electrics. This announcement has led to many questions from drivers around Kearny Mesa and San Diego. Do all vehicles have to be electric by 2035? Can you buy gasoline in 2035? Kearny Mesa Kia is here to unpack the nuances of this legislation to help you make the best and most informed decisions regarding your automotive needs in California.

Is California Going to Mandate Electric Cars?

With the announcement of this legislation, you may be asking, “Is California going to mandate electric cars?” The regulation applies to automakers, not car dealers in California. It also only covers new vehicle sales. This mandate does not impact existing vehicles on the road today. These will still be legal to own and drive in Kearny Mesa and beyond.

Do All Vehicles Have to be Electric by 2035?

Do all vehicles have to be electric by 2035? No, all vehicles on the roads of California do not have to be electric by 2035. Plug-in hybrid, full battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles count toward an automaker’s requirement. For a PHEV to qualify, it must have an all-electric range of at least 50 miles under real-world driving conditions.

Can You Buy Gasoline in 2035?

Yes, you will still be able to purchase gasoline in California in 2035. A vast majority of vehicles currently on the road today are powered by gasoline. Demand for traditional gasoline will last for decades to come. Used cars sold after 2035 are also able to still be powered by gasoline, so it will be quite some time before gas stations become obsolete in the state.
